Camping with bears

Bear Spray

Going camping? Will there be bears? Bear spray or a gun?
Don’t bring your gun. Have bear spray and you’ll be safer.

There are bad statistics on guys that tried to stop a bear with their gun.
It usually doesn’t work for the guy. The bear usually
wins the fight.
When they compare survival stats of people
using bear spray
the bear spray wins almost every time.
It’s hard to hold your gun in the
perfect place to kill a
charging bear. But bear spray only has to be
in the area of the
bear to be effective!

The problem you might have is the wind.
If it’s blowing at you the spray will also blow back at you, not the bear.

Another problem with spraying might be if you are inside a tent.
In spite of the wind, I’ll take the bear spray any day.
It works better and it’s safer.

Story Time

Karen and I were camping in King’s Canyon in California.
There were only a few people camping in that campground.
The ranger came by and told us there was a bear in the area.
I told the ranger we will be careful, and we also have bear spray.
He told me it’s illegal to have bear spray in a National Park Campground.
I guess he expected us to just feed the bears!
I told him we’ll see how it works out later if there is a problem.
That time the problem was the bees not the bears!

According to Copilot:

It is illegal to have bear spray in Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon
and Lassen! Because they only have black bears there.
They say black bears aren’t as dangerous. I guess they don’t know
that people have been killed by black bears too!
